With their participation, volunteers demonstrate how people can help in the success of the Games, even though they are not athletes, and they elevate the true value of Olympism through a common effort. The greatest celebration of humanity is only possible through the will, passion, dedication and professionalism of each volunteer. ATHENS 2004 has made the Volunteers' Official Application Form available as of January 30, 2003, attracting a large number of volunteers from Greece as well as abroad. At the same time, it has begun the Volunteer Selection Programme while continuing the operation of the Volunteers Programme.

Volunteers

Approximately 60,000 volunteers will participate in the 2004 Olympic Games. Recognizing the importance of volunteer work and the contribution of volunteers, we are targeting the creation of the most suitable conditions for the 2004 Olympic volunteers.

Conditions:

After submission of the volunteer application form, there are the following three stages:
Personal interview
Training
Participation

Volunteers must be 18 years of age by the 31st of December 2003 and will be involved in a variety of areas of Olympic activity, such as sports, medical/health services, technology, environment, ceremonies, spectator services, administration, hospitality/tourism, Olympic and Paralympic Family transportation etc.

Periods for Volunteer Involvement

There are four periods for volunteers to offer their services:

During Sport Events, which will be organised in order to test the facilities and all operations before the Games: 2003 - 2004
During the preparation of the Olympic and Paralympic Games: May 2004 - August 2004
During the Olympic Games: 13-29 August 2004
During the Paralympic Games: 17-28 September 2004

The period of volunteer involvement depends on the area that he/she will choose to offer his/her services. The usual period of volunteer involvement in the Olympic and Paralympic Games is 7-10 days.
