| Greece 2004 Programme - Olympic Cities | |||||||
The Greek Government has designed and
is implementing a special project entitled "Greece 2004", which
constitutes one of the pillars of the Olympic preparations. The project
offers a new dimension in regional development, highlights the national
perspective of the Olympic and Paralympic Games, and integrates the entire
country in the Olympic preparations through a variety of interventions,
in such fields as infrastructure, sports, culture, education and tourism.
Furthermore, the country's promotion in view of the Games, contributes
to the competitiveness of local economies and improves tourist development
after 2004. It is the first time that, in an Olympic Organization, such
a project is undertaken within the entire country and not only in the
host city. The total budget for the project is 1.3 billion €. |

| There are four cities that
have been chosen to host the preliminary games of the Olympic Football
Tournament Olympic Football Tournament. These are the cities of Thessaloniki,
Patras, Heraklion and Volos. Moreover, the Shot Put Event will be held
in the Stadium of Ancient Olympia on 18 August 2004. As the preliminary
games of the Olympic Football Tournament will take place two days before
the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games, it is from these cities that
the first Olympic images will be transmitted to the world. |
