Information for the visitor of the Olympics 2004 in Athens

Public works - Transport

Currently, many construction projects are underway in view of the 2004 Olympic Games, not only in the Attica county, but all over Greece. The nation is in an intensive period of infrastructural preparation, in order to greet the Olympic and Paralympic Games, while at the same time ensuring a permanent legacy for future generations.

A fundamental part of the philosophy behind the Olympic Games is respect for the environment. The Greek Government in cooperation with ATHENS 2004 Organising Comitee have worked hard to accomplish the impeccable organization and carrying out of the Olympic Games in a healthy environment, as well as the improvement of environment conditions in Athens and the Attica Basin, with strategic interventions.

Olympic and Paralympic Village

The Olympic and Paralympic Village is located at the foot of Parnitha, a mountain situated in the Municipality of Acharnes, close to the centre of Athens and covers an area of 1,240 square meters. The Olympic Village will host 16,000 athletes during the Olympic Games, and 6,000 athletes during the Paralympics, who will reside in buildings equipped for people with special needs. Upon completion of the Games in 2004, the Workers' Housing Organization (OEK), which is responsible for the construction of the project, will use these houses to accommodate its beneficiaries.

Media Villages

ATHENS 2004 Organising Comitee is responsible for ensuring accommodation for all accredited media representatives, 11,290 in total. These are being built in seven locations in Attica. Four of these settlements are new, with a capacity of 1,000 - 1,600 beds. Their post-Olympic use will cover specific housing needs of residents and services. Each "village" includes shopping areas and restaurants, recreational and entertainment areas. The relatively high cost of development for the Media Villages is set off by the advantage of the city's heritage of socially beneficial installations.

Hellenikon Olympic Complex (HOSC)

Unification of Archaeological Sites

The unification of the archaeological sites of Athens is the work of the “Unification of the Archaeological Sites of Athens S.A.”, a common programme of the Ministry of Culture and the Ministry of the Environment, Physical Planning and Public Works. The purpose is the unification of the cultural inheritance of the Athens Centre and the re-structuring - improvement of areas in the Historic Centre. This is one of the most important parts of Athens and, culturally, the most significant.

Transport

Transportation is critical to the success of the Olympic Games. ATHENS 2004 is carefully and methodically planning transportation during the period of the Games. It is closely working with the competent Government bodies in order to develop and implement a transportation strategy able to handle the challenge of the Olympic Games

During the Games, transportation will involve the daily transfer of thousands of athletes, team escorts, judges-referees, media representatives, spectators, Officials, members of the Olympic Family, sponsors, employees and volunteers to their destinations, greatly determining the success of the Games.

The ATHENS 2004 Transport Division will handle this project during the Olympic and Paralympic Games. The Olympic Operational Plan for Traffic and Transit Management, involving radical restructuring of the transportation system throughout the greater Attica region, underway for several years, will provide the necessary infrastructure by Games-time.

A series of major infrastructure changes that will be in place by the summer of 2004 will transform the city of Athens, improving the flow of traffic as well as the travel of commuters, thus sanctioning new transfer habits.
